The 21st WEGEMT on Ships for Coastal and Inland Waters was organised by the Institute of Ship Technology Duisburg, Germany, in 1994. The School responded to: the increasing global significance of Coastal and Inland Shipping as part of an integrated shipment network; the extension of inland waterways to meet the requirements of sea-going ships in an across the border transportation system; and the official establishment of the Institute of Ship Technology Duisburg (ISD) at the Gerhard-Mercator-Universitit –GH Duisburg 40 years after the training of marine engineers was instituted in Duisburg.
